A Sunday Thought I Can\u2019t Shake<\/h3>

It didn\u2019t end\u2014it just evolved. What once roared now whispers through passive acceptance.\u00a0 It preys on apathy.\u00a0 <\/span>It is my observation that too many have traded conviction for convenience, outsourcing their values to team colors and charismatic figureheads.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>

Thi Nguyen\u00a0<\/strong><\/a> o<\/span>ffers a compelling lens worth revisiting\u2014one that challenges how we think about values in the age of algorithms. In his work on value capture<\/em><\/strong> and gamification<\/em><\/strong>, Nguyen argues that social structures and technologies don\u2019t just influence us\u2014they shape the very way we think and what we come to value.<\/span><\/p>

He warns that when we rely on simplified metrics\u2014likes, scores, follower counts (as illustrated example we may all know and love from the likes of Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Instagram, Reddit, Bluesky, etc.) \u2014we risk surrendering our deeper values to external systems designed to manipulate attention and behavior. These metrics, often preyed upon by systemic influencers, can distort our sense of agency and gradually replace intrinsic meaning with performative validation.\u00a0 The end result is exchanging freedoms gained through free will, accountable autonomy to less tangible currency systems like like variety and comfort.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cTeam XYZ\u201d {insert political doctrine theming, systemic religious dogma, etc.) thinking isn\u2019t just tribal\u2014it\u2019s dangerous and methodically driven – see Edward Bernays and his influence of establishing what is now best known as the system of gamification.<\/span>

<\/span>With 19 states now actively<\/a> mobilizing,<\/a> what once felt theoretical is rapidly cascading into hard realities\u2014ones that may soon be impossible to ignore or reverse.<\/span><\/p>

People ask, \u201cHow did this happen?\u201d<\/em><\/span>
But the real question is: “How\/Why are we still letting it happen?”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Recently, I began revisiting Anne Frank\u2019s writings \u2014not as a student, but as someone living through a time that echoes hers more than I ever imagined possible.\u00a0 Her words aren\u2019t just historical \u2014they are hauntingly present.\u00a0 The quiet normalization. Courageous authors like Timothy Egan have pulled back the curtain.\u00a0 In A Fever in the Heartland<\/em><\/a>, he reveals how power wasn\u2019t stumbled upon\u2014it was meticulously built, brick by brick, over time.<\/span><\/p>

This book describes how D.C. Stephenson, the powerful and manipulative Ku Klux Klan leader in 1920s Indiana.<\/span><\/p>
