No Elf\u2011on\u2011the\u2011Shelf chaos, no forced traditions\u2014just an unschooling\u2011style exploration of old\u2011world practices.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c715cc1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c715cc1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A few years ago we shifted to doing\u00a0<em>micro\u2011celebrations<\/em> from Samhain all the way through the Lunar New Year. Instead of one huge, high\u2011pressure holiday, we explore and learn and try to understand lots of smaller traditions during this time period: Samhain, Halloween, Toussaint, Calan Gaeaf\/All Saints, Krampusnacht, St. Nicholas, Solstice, the 12 Nights of Yule (veil thinning, offerings, ancestor pours), Dziady with a bit of Baba Yaga flavor, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Martin%27s_Day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martinmas<\/a> as a final harvest feast, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%81lfabl%C3%B3t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00c1lfabl\u00f3t<\/a> (our private family ancestor\/elf honoring &#8211; the\u00a0Elven sacrifice), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Lucy%27s_Day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lussinatta<\/a>, Hanukkah, Frau Holle and spinning customs, Hogmanay, and New Year\u2019s Eve.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4e06a52 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4e06a52\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It\u2019s given them space to choose what resonates, skip what doesn\u2019t, and notice how older traditions echo through modern ones. And for us, it\u2019s turned the whole season into something gentler, more flexible, and far more regulated for everyone.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-98bd046 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"98bd046\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now that we\u2019ve built a little library of winter traditions, our four neurodivergent kiddos each get to choose what they want to take part in. It might be pouring mead or lemon\u2011honey tea water for Odin and his ravens, putting shoes out for St. Nicholas, or laughing while Dad gets \u201cdisciplined\u201d by Krampusnacht for not pulling his weight. (We only recently learned that Krampus originally had a more feminine, protective role\u2014less about scaring kids into compliance and more about holding fathers accountable to their families.)<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c4120c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0c4120c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Letting the kids pick their own level of engagement has taken so much pressure off the whole season. It\u2019s helped us reset expectations, lower anxiety, and avoid a lot of the Christmas\u2011related overwhelm that used to hit hard.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0371df3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0371df3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And when extended family starts slipping into authoritative or \u201cshould\u201d\u2011based commentary, we just step away before anyone spirals into dysregulation. We\u2019re not perfect at it, but it\u2019s been a huge shift toward meeting our PDA\u2011ers where they are instead of trying to force a compliance model that never worked for them\u2014or us.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-235d495 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"235d495\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Maybe some helpful notes in here. I find myself returning to this familiar threshold, I am not afraid, but awake, sometimes too awake, hyper\u2011aware!\u00a0 I don\u2019t often know what to do beyond the next right thing.\u00a0 I perceive, feel, or see. As Jesus watches, wealthy individuals contribute large sums to the offering chests. Then a poor widow approaches and places in two tiny coins\u2014mites, the smallest currency of the time. Though her gift was materially insignificant, it represented \u201call she had to live on.\u201d Jesus declared her offering greater than all the others, not because of its size, but because she gave from her very livelihood. Her act was not about wealth, display, or excess; it was an expression of trust, sacrifice, and wholehearted faith.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-20227f0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"20227f0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In <\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000;\">Eastern Christianity <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">practice and interpretation, the widow\u2019s mite is often interpreted as a lesson in humility, sacrificial love, and the spiritual value of giving from the heart rather than from abundance. In nuanced contrast, <\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000;\">Western Christianity<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, interprets the scene as a call to sacrificial generosity, stewardship, and sometimes even a critique of social injustice when the poor are compelled to give beyond their means.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e449461 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e449461\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The lesson is timeless: the smallest offering, given sincerely, carries immense meaning.\u00a0 This story reminds me that true abundance emerges not from excess nor opulence, but from giving when it costs us something &#8211; the measure of sacrifice is relative to the person impacted by the experience &#8211; it is often immeasurable to anyone observing. It was a season of both hardship and hope: food stores ran thin, the cold pressed in, and yet families gathered to feast, to honor deities and daemons, and to trust that light would return.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b4f39d6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b4f39d6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Offerings were and now are made \u2014 mead poured out, livestock given, food shared with ancestors, spirits, daemons and yes &#8211; deities, too. These were not gifts from surplus, but from necessity. To give in midwinter was to risk, to trust, to lean into the unknown. Just as the widow\u2019s mite was a gift of livelihood, Yule sacrifices carried weight because they cost something real.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-563b842 elementor-widget elementor-widget-thim-ekits-heading\" data-id=\"563b842\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"thim-ekits-heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"thim-ekits-heading thim-ekit__heading\"><h4 class=\"title\">\ud83c\udf0c Faith in Renewal<\/h4><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d3fefd8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d3fefd8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Norse believed that through these offerings, they participated in the cosmic cycle: death and rebirth, darkness and light. Odin, honored as J\u00f3lnir (\u201cYule figure\u201d), presided over the season, while the Wild Hunt swept across the skies. To give during Yule was to align oneself with renewal, to declare faith that the sun would rise again.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The lessons are diverse and timeless: the smallest offering, given sincerely, carries immense meaning. A portion of bread left for ancestors, a cup of ale poured into the earth, a candle lit against the dark\u2014these acts echo the widow\u2019s mite. Both traditions remind us that abundance is not measured in plenty, but in courage and intention and purpose.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a486586 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a486586\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These traditions teach us that meaningful giving arises during, from and often in the cruelties of scarcity.\u00a0 Giving in scarcity is an act of hope. Whether coins in the Temple or food at Yule, the gift is magnified by the courage it takes to offer it.\u00a0 True abundance is born not of overflow, but of trust\u2014trust in deity, trust in the cycle of renewal, trust in the unseen.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2cf8a15 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2cf8a15\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yule is not just a historical festival.
