This week, a comment in a LinkedIn thread nudged something in me (Click on the LinkedIn button above for reference). Not a crisis, not a revelation \u2014 just that quiet internal shift when a pattern you\u2019ve been watching finally resolves into a signal.<\/span><\/p>

In my professional spaces, I tend to watch for those signals. The ones beneath the noise. The ones we pretend are new. The ones we quietly normalize because naming them would require us to change something we\u2019ve grown comfortable with.<\/span><\/p>

So this isn\u2019t a manifesto. And it isn\u2019t a prescription. It\u2019s simply an observation \u2014 a steady, executive\u2011leaning look at the landscape as it stands.<\/span><\/p>

As the stories continue to form around the Instructure\/Canvas incident, I keep widening the lens. Because this moment isn\u2019t just about one breach \u2014 it\u2019s about the structural posture of EdTech, HigherEd, and especially community colleges.<\/span><\/p>

Verified reporting confirms that the Canvas breach exposed names, emails, student IDs, and internal messages (UpGuard, May 4, 2026). ShinyHunters escalated it into an extortion campaign, defacing login pages and threatening to release stolen data unless a ransom was paid (Varonis; DoControl, May 8, 2026). With Canvas serving more than 8,800 institutions worldwide, attackers claimed 3.65 TB of data and roughly 275 million records (Wikipedia, May 2026). Some districts even reported extortion attempts targeting students directly.<\/span><\/p>

That scale is unprecedented in Instructure\u2019s history.<\/span><\/p>

And it\u2019s hard not to notice the timing.<\/span><\/p>

Before Instructure was taken private by KKR in 2024, incidents simply weren\u2019t occurring at this magnitude. Not causation \u2014 but correlation worth examining. Ownership models shape incentives. Incentives shape architectures. Architectures shape risk.<\/span><\/p>

Private\u2011equity environments often prioritize scale, margin expansion, and speed. EdTech has been absorbing those pressures for years.\u00a0 The point isn\u2019t to assign blame, but to acknowledge how ownership structures shape operational realities.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Across EdTech and HigherEd, we\u2019ve normalized architectures that favor efficiency and cost reduction over sovereignty, resilience, and purpose\u2011aligned data practices.<\/span><\/p>

Community colleges feel this most acutely:<\/span><\/p>

    • high\u2011stakes student needs<\/span><\/li>
    • limited budgets<\/span><\/li>
    • legacy integrations<\/span><\/li>
    • multi\u2011vendor ecosystems<\/span><\/li>
    • and deep reliance on platforms never designed for their realities<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>

      We\u2019ve also ignored GDPR\u2011level basics: purpose\u2011of\u2011use alignment, minimization, retention limits, lifecycle management. Data sits far longer than necessary, often without justification. The breach didn\u2019t create that problem \u2014 it exposed it.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

      I\u2019m writing this now because moments like this deserve more than surface\u2011level reactions. They ask for steadier eyes, longer memory, and a willingness to name what\u2019s actually happening beneath the narratives. If we\u2019re going to have serious conversations about the future of EdTech and HigherEd \u2014 especially in community colleges \u2014 then the analysis has to be honest, grounded, and unflinching. That\u2019s the spirit behind this piece.<\/span><\/p>

      Because the leaders who will shape the next decade of HigherEd \u2014 especially in community colleges \u2014 will need to see these signals clearly:<\/span><\/p>

      • the structural vulnerabilities<\/span><\/p><\/li>

      • the governance gaps<\/span><\/p><\/li>

      • the ownership\u2011model incentives<\/span><\/p><\/li>

      • the operational realities beneath the innovation narratives<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul>

        And they\u2019ll need to be willing to ask harder questions about what we\u2019ve built, what we\u2019ve normalized, and what we\u2019ve quietly accepted as \u201cthe way things are.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

        If this moment is revealing anything, it\u2019s the need to re\u2011center the fundamentals we\u2019ve drifted away from.<\/span><\/p>

        1. Local Solutions<\/h3>

        Not as nostalgia, but as sovereignty. The closer a solution sits to the people it serves, the more adaptive, contextual, and accountable it becomes. Centralization has its efficiencies, but it also creates single points of failure \u2014 technical, operational, and cultural. Resilience grows from the ground up, not the top down.<\/span><\/p>

        2. Human Capacity<\/h3>

        Technology scales. People absorb the consequences. Faculty, staff, and students carry the operational weight of every architectural decision made far above them. Investing in their capacity \u2014 not just their compliance \u2014 is the difference between a system that survives disruption and one that fractures under it.<\/span><\/p>

        3. Institutional Agency<\/h3>

        Institutions cannot outsource their identity. When platforms, vendors, and ownership models shift faster than governance structures can adapt, agency erodes. Institutions need the authority, literacy, and courage to make decisions aligned with their mission, not just their contracts.<\/span><\/p>

        4. Data Practices Grounded in Purpose and Stewardship<\/h3>

        Data is not an asset; it is a responsibility. Purpose\u2011of\u2011use alignment, minimization, retention discipline, and lifecycle governance are not regulatory burdens \u2014 they are the backbone of trust. When data outlives its purpose, it becomes risk. When stewardship is replaced by accumulation, vulnerability becomes inevitable.<\/span><\/p>

        These aren\u2019t recommendations. They\u2019re the pillars that have always mattered \u2014 the ones we drift from when the comfort carousel spins and the scaffolding of efficiency becomes the story.<\/span><\/p>
