There\u2019s a friction I keep running into lately \u2014 in work conversations, in community spaces, in faith discussions, in the philosophical circles people slip into when they\u2019re trying to sound grounded. It shows up everywhere: the way people talk about \u201cfreedom\u201d with a straight face while tightening their grip on the people closest to them.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s the same contradiction every time: <\/span><\/p>\n

I get labeled \u201cpermissive\u201d sometimes. It\u2019s an easy shorthand for people who don\u2019t understand neurodiversity, emotional literacy, or the simple fact that connection is the prerequisite for growth. What I\u2019m actually doing is creating conditions where my kids \u2014 autistic, ADHD, PDA\u2011wired \u2014 can learn to self\u2011govern in a way that fits their neurotype.<\/span><\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t look like the old model. It\u2019s not meant to.<\/span><\/p>\n

But here\u2019s the irony: the same people who criticize that approach are the ones who claim to want a society built on freedom, agency, and constitutional self\u2011governance. They want a republic of self\u2011directed citizens \u2014 but they raise children in systems that punish autonomy and reward compliance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Parenting neurodivergent kids taught me something the Constitution has been trying to say for 250 years: pressure is not the same thing as responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

A healthy republic doesn\u2019t manufacture compliance through force. A healthy family doesn\u2019t either.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both systems \u2014 the national and the neurological \u2014 depend on the same principle: you build the conditions where agency can exist.<\/span><\/p>\n

You don\u2019t coerce it. You don\u2019t frighten it. You don\u2019t shame it. You create the environment where it can take root.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s the logic behind limited government, checks and balances, and protected liberties. It\u2019s also the logic behind co\u2011regulation, sensory safety, and autonomy\u2011with\u2011scaffolding. Developmental alignment \u2014 scaled to a nation on one side and a nervous system on the other.<\/span><\/p>\n

When people aren\u2019t pushed into fight\u2011flight\u2011freeze by political chaos or institutional overreach, they can access what the Framers cared about most: self\u2011governance.<\/span><\/p>\n

When neurodivergent kids aren\u2019t pushed into fight\u2011flight\u2011freeze by adult panic or behavioral pressure, they can access what development actually requires: internal regulation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not obedience. Not submission. Agency.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s the civic version of the line I use in my own work.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Relational safety over domination. Civic literacy over blind loyalty. Presence \u2014 actual participation \u2014 over pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bukowski would say it\u2019s the only way anything real ever changes. Banksy would stencil it on a courthouse wall. The Stoics would call it discipline \u2014 the discipline of a state that restrains itself so the people don\u2019t have to live in fear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last week, my 6\u2011year\u2011old had a fall on the school playground. Not many witnesses. No dramatic scene. Just a small boy on the ground, suddenly quiet in that way I know too well \u2014 the non\u2011verbal freeze that signals overwhelm. In this case, pain.<\/span><\/p>

His teacher \u2014 someone we trust \u2014 thought he seemed fine. And from the outside, I understand why. But when I reached him and put my hands on his arm, his body told the truth his voice couldn\u2019t: guarded posture, muscle tension, the instinctive stillness of a nervous system protecting itself.<\/span><\/p>

This is where neurodiversity shows up in real time. Not as a label. As a lived reality.<\/span><\/p>

What followed was the familiar caregiver marathon many of us know: advocating for imaging, navigating insurance and protocols, and walking him through the sensory overload of medical settings \u2014 fluorescent lights, unfamiliar voices, questions he couldn\u2019t answer. None of it was resistance. None of it was defiance. It was overwhelm. His system was already at capacity, and the medical environment pushed it further.<\/span><\/p>

The first round of imaging was inconclusive \u2014 swelling and fluid making it hard to see what was actually happening. So we waited, watched, and returned a week later for the follow\u2011up. This time, the picture was clear: a hairline fracture. He\u2019ll be casted this afternoon.<\/span><\/p>

And when the adults finally slowed down enough to listen \u2014 to him, to his body, to the signals he couldn\u2019t put into words \u2014 he softened. His shoulders dropped. His breathing steadied. His whole system exhaled.<\/span><\/p>

That\u2019s what stays with me: the injury wasn\u2019t the hardest part \u2014 the overwhelm was.<\/span><\/p>

The cast won\u2019t just stabilize the bone. It will stabilize the world around him \u2014 a small anchor in a week that asked too much of his nervous system.<\/span><\/p>

Weeks like this remind me how much of our work happens quietly, long before anyone else notices \u2014 and how often that pattern repeats across generations.<\/span><\/p>

I see it in a lot of communities. Older parents \u2014 now grandparents \u2014 who raised latchkey kids with a kind of benign neglect suddenly want to exert spiritual or moral authority over those same kids as adults. The moment an adult child asks for help, the power dynamic snaps back into place. Expectations shift. Righteousness becomes a bargaining chip.<\/span><\/p>

It\u2019s a strange inversion: the generation that gave us independence as children now fears our independence as adults.<\/span><\/p>

And when those adult children step outside the local gravitational pull \u2014 move states, build different lives, form different conclusions \u2014 the narrative becomes \u201cat risk,\u201d \u201cwayward,\u201d \u201clost.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Sometimes the only thing they\u2019re lost from is someone else\u2019s control.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

There\u2019s also this quiet grief I see in older parents: \u201cIf only I had parented differently when they were four to eight.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But you can\u2019t parent a 25\u2011year\u2011old like an 8\u2011year\u2011old. That window is gone. The work now is acceptance, not correction.<\/span><\/p>\n

And yet the instinct is to double down \u2014 to try to re\u2011parent adults through doctrine, pressure, guilt, or proximity. It doesn\u2019t work. It never has. It\u2019s the same mistake authoritarian systems make: trying to manufacture freedom through control.<\/span><\/p>\n

You don\u2019t get self\u2011governing citizens that way. You get compliance until the first moment of escape.<\/span><\/p>\n

If we want a society capable of self\u2011governance, we have to practice it in the smallest unit first: the family. Not the idealized family of manuals and lessons, but the real one \u2014 the one with neurodiversity, trauma, divergent paths, and kids who don\u2019t fit the mold.<\/span><\/p>\n

Freedom isn\u2019t taught through force. Agency isn\u2019t learned through fear. Resilience isn\u2019t built through obedience.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s built through connection. Through emotional literacy. Through the slow, patient work of letting people become themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n
