They’re the places where my nervous system settles, where truth shows up without needing permission. And for the nine‑year‑old version of me who once dreamed of crossing that finish line, hearing “Shane Livingston, Logan Utah… You are an Ironman!” It wasn’t just a moment — it was a crooked and wandering journey of fulfillment. There’s no neat way to hold that. But I carry it. There is no single narrative that resolves it. It’s a truth that sits in the margins, in the contradictions, in the places where love and loss collide. Grief is a hungry hunter, and there is not EASY button that resolves it!

And even inside that grief, endurance gave me one of the most grounding memories I hold. I swam in the American and Sacramento rivers. The folklore I was told – those rivers would kill me if I ever tried open water swimming it — rivers that demanded respect, rivers that didn’t care about my fears or my history. Steve was by my side during that hellish swim around the broken buoy in the confluence, we were steady and present in a way that still anchors me. That memory is intact. Still mine. Still good. Still surfacing wet eyes!

Real storytelling requires lived experience. It requires leaving the polish off.
