I have really been encouraged and using this principle. It reminds me of the commitment pattern that was used while I was a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

What I find interesting is how so many people are fearful of losing their jobs and being replaced by newer persons or technology. However these fearful beings commonly do not embrace the mentality of making themselves stronger by learning and increasing their current skill set.

The principles in the SMART concept are great. They are truly basic, simplistic and direct.

‎”Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” ~ Leonardo Da Vinci….

I have really been liking this concept as well. I find too many people over complicate business process logic. I find that this is done for several reasons: Political reasons, lack of knowledge transfer, insulation from accountability, resistance from business process modernization, resistance to change, etc. These various things attribute various complexities as opposed to using reasoning to simplify things whether it is an automated process or human oriented process. It is truly one of the more frustrating things I encounter in my business.

These over-complications deflect humans from embracing the concept of using their mind to further things and advance. Humans have a tendency to in business tasks to become mindless in the corporate structures today. What I find odd is that many of these individuals are the same persons complaining about broken processes yet defending them when opportunities for change begin to present themselves whether by need or wise business planning. Many of the failures that I see are from management oriented individuals that do not know how to wisely engage their personnel which deteriorates opportunities for success. Many of the management are typically poor in trying to adhere to sound principles or structured concepts that could provide them a road map to success.

S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Achievable
R – Realistic
T – Timely

Specific –

Keep it direct, simple and verbalize or communicate this concept clearly. Many of the personnel really yearn for specific tasks and goals in order for them not to be confused and feel that a decision they may not be empowered to make derails them into confusion.

Measurable –

To me this means accountable. I have found regardless of discipline, when I am not bound to being accountable to things, I wander and eventually become dis-interested in all associations. Personnel need to be measured in order for mentoring and training that is effective to occur. This will allow personnel to develop trust, and create unity to the corporations they serve.

Achievable –

Humans yearn to achieve things. From a management perspective, managers that set unrealistic goals will never have the opportunity to create favorable team unity. Further, it is strongly needed to foster a group that can have small successes in order to prepare them for larger breakthroughs and successes.

Realistic

THings that are realistic create opportunities for success. People that feel they are going against something that is not realistic only creates negativity..
