Facebook To Share Users’ Home Addresses, Phone Numbers With External Sites

www.huffingtonpost.com

Facebook will be moving forward with a controversial plan to give third-party developers and external websites the ability to access users’ home addresses and cellphone numbers in the face of criticism from privacy experts, users, and even congressmen. Facebook quietly announced the new policy in a…..

ME:

I never share or place what may be aggregated beyond what I am comfortable with…rule of thumb and best practice…otherwise consumers like spokeo etc can distribute freely what they will…similar to information in log files on servers or in the cloud…a lot of ip and privacy liabilities will come forward in the near future…some precedent is being set on these issues in appellate courts already….fwiw…

Poster 1:, Thanks for making this mom very proud to have a son like you!

Poster 2: Seriously? They can do that?

ME: It’s in Their TOS (Terms of Service)…

Poster 3: Yeah, I never had my contact info on FB. It’s like they think they’re untouchable…

ME:

ok…let’s be fair and reasonable here….this information is currently in the public domain…always has been (since I have been alive 1974) …however, the tools for distribution have been much different and access even more restrictive…

now the aggregation of this information and new FOIA policies are driving entities such as FB etc, to make it easier to distribute requested information without the entity (FB for example)  having to absorb cost in researching and supplying the information….

This gets even more interesting when hosts are not really the true owner of the hardware where your information resides….

the host let’s call it Logan City Utilities for example, states I will never share your protected information (is this a fair statement, maybe from their perspective but are they able to truly deliver on this statement?) ….let’s say Logan City Utilities is hosting their information in a ‘cloud’ through IBM and now IBM has rights of access to all information that traffics their various devices.  IBM is contracted with “Salesforce X” to help mitigate cost of their hardware…IBM then releases your information to Salesforce X at $$$ Cost per name in exchange and to help provide Logan City Utility services to keep them interested and to continue using IBM’s hosted services…..

Bottom line, is it is a new era….I’m not so much interested in who has my information, but rather is what I provide them a fair and honest accounting of who I am.  Is it then interpreted and used in the same manner….is it trafficked consistent to their promises and are the promises documented and explained to me as a reasonable user in a manner that is easy for me to acquire and consume.  Is the entity accountable to their actions, and can they be pursued if damages or injury occurs outside of what they promised to do within reason…..

the reality, fb isn’t the only one that thinks they are untouchable, most of us finger pointers believe we are also untouchable….  adds depth and complication to the discussion…..

my $.02; for now
