Neurodiversity affected by recent USA - Dept of Education dismantling
A friend of ours gathered this info. She is a caregiver and in the space of grant writing – so has a perspective of this decisioning worth paying attetion to.
The Federal Special Education Department was almost completely dismantled over the weekend. This will directly impact our nations most vulnerable population as well as our teachers, parents, families, and any child receiving services of any kind (speech therapy, reading support, ADHD support, autism support, medical adjustments, accommodations, pull-out instruction, brain breaks, movement breaks, Behavioral Intervention Plans, etc.). These cuts mean funding, oversight, support, and accountability are at risk. What happened to equal free and appropriate public education (FAPE) for ALL of our nations children? Not just the privileged? Not just the chosen?
At this time, parents need to step up (even more) and MUST be their child’s strongest advocate. Be ready to:
- Know your rights.
- Don’t assume the school will do the right thing.
- Build support.
- Document everything.
- Be ready to escalate if needed.
I highly encourage anyone impacted by these cuts, or touched by someone in their lives who depends on these services to DEMAND answers and accountability. Write emails, letters, make phone calls. Reach out to your Local, State, and Federal Officials and express your concern. Urge them to reverse or mitigate these most recent actions that are a huge blow to our nations education system and general human decency. I will include contact info for Utah below:

@understood.org Hundreds of staff members at the U.S. Department of Education have been laid off, including nearly the entire Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is still the law. But with almost no one left to oversee and enforce it, families may face new challenges in making sure schools follow IEPs and provide required services. Understood is here to help you stay informed and supported through these changes. We’ll continue sharing updates as more information becomes available. #departmentofeducation #specialeducation #adhd #dyslexia #ieps ♬ original sound - understood.org
